First mentioned in 1271 as Lubemyn, the name has Slavic roots and was initially part of Eldena monastery lands

Transitioned to Swedish rule during the Thirty Years’ War (1637), later becoming Prussian after the 1815 Congress of Vienna .

Emerged as a seaside resort in 1886, followed by railway connectivity in 1898 and the establishment of the first pier around 1900


After WWII, it fell under DDR jurisdiction and saw major developments: a nuclear power plant built in 1969, shut down post-reunification, and a new pier inaugurated in 1992
